New Bill Delays Medicare Pay Cut Until 2014, Provides Raises in Interim

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

According to Robert Lowes with Medscape Medical News, there is a new outline of a proposed law to be presented by Congressional Democrats that would “delay a 21 % cut in Medicare reimbursement to physicians until 2014 and increase rates for the rest of 2010 as well as 2011.”

Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) and Rep. Sander Levin (D-MI) summarized the proposed law stating “Reimbursement rates would not decrease in 2012 and 2013, and they could increase even more in those years if the growth of Medicare spending on physician services is within reasonable limits.” Primary Care and Preventive Services would see higher reimbursement increases.

However, the review of the bill indicates rates would return to “current law levels” in 2014. This means they would be subject to Medicare’s SGR (sustainable growth rate) formula for setting physician reimbursement. This formula is what triggered the rate cuts set for June 1. The possibility of Medicare reimbursement rates decreasing by more than 30% when the proposed law expires is a looming cloud over the bill.
